- MARTYN-ISM By Anders Christian Madsen

"By keeping it unreal, Bal keeps it real - and as he fittingly concludes: "Fashion should never reflect realism. Fashion should be the ideal. Realism is what we have, so if you don't have an ideal, you have nothing to live up to. No dreams. And fashion should always reflect that dream - the untouchable - which makes you want to have it so much more."

- BAL's ON FIRE

Martyn Bal is fast becoming a DANSK favourite. Actually, he’s kind of obtained that title in record time – also, Graeme at IPR was sneaky enough to stick a few photos into a certain editor’s pocket before he jetted off for the spring/summer 2010 editorial meeting in Copenhagen… and how Mr. and Mrs. Boss loved it! If one had a penny for every ooh and ah one could hear whilst that look book made its rounds round that meticulously polished, black, shiny Danish design table, one could… well, maybe one would come a step closer to affording that coat up there from Martyn’s autumn/winter 2010 collection. Swoon!

If a man is known by the company he keeps - and the companies that retain his services - then Martyn Bal deserves to be more widely recognised. Having completed an MA at London's Royal College of Art in 2000, the young designer was instantly recruited to assist Hedi Slimane at Dior Homme, helping to make the label arguably the most influential in early Noughties menswear. Bal followed that plum first job with stints as creative director and design consultant at Verri Uomo and Versace respectively before being hired by Burberry as menswear design director. (Burberry Prorsum autumn/winter 2007 was his last collection.)

- SHORTLIST Style Stars Of 2010

British labels could dominate in 2010. Shortlist takes a closer look in a seven-page special.
MARTYN BAL
After graduating from the Royal College Of Art in 2000, Bal assisted Hedi Slimane to transform Dior Homme into what it is today. Now the designer has launched his own solo collection - and it's spectacular.

- HEADBANGERS' BAL by Dean Mayo Davies

Some time ago I was interviewed by Dean Mayo Davies, and last week the article was published on DAZED DIGITAL.
HEADBANGERS’ BAL
Martyn Bal is the London-based, Dutch menswear designer who makes clothes for "an audacious gentleman, a hopeless romantic with a dirty mind"
Text by Dean Mayo Davies | Published 04 September 2009
With experience at Dior, Versace and Burberry, Martyn Bal has finally put his own name on a label, producing collections tinged with the duality of slick precision and bold attitude. "I believe the clothes should hold up a mirror to a man’s inner strength, the core of which is versatility," he says. Contradiction is important, but then it would be - this well-turned out, mild-mannered designer played in punk bands as a teen before becoming a romantic and dressing "like a complete freak". His fit model is close mate Phil Bush of Cazals, and it couldn’t make more sense. A lesson in modernism, Bal - and his collections - are the summation of the modern man.

// Vanessa Contini
